What is the difference between pigment ink and dye ink?

A question often asked is what the difference between pigment ink is compared to dye ink. When choosing between the two it is important to understand the variations to make the right choice.

This can also impact which inkjet printer is the best for your operation. Take the dye option – these are generally liquid based with the colour fully dissolved in the liquid. Whereas a pigment will be more of a powdery substance with the colour particles suspended in the solution. This difference can therefore affect the colour stability. With the pigment dyes sitting more on the surface of the media and being more fade resistant and last longer. In contrast the dye ink absorbs into the media fibre which means it can result in the ink running when in contact with water.

Why should I use a dye ink?

The most obvious reason is that dye inks generally have a wider colour gamut and so the results are far punchier in colour. This can be more appealing for printers and their customers, as they are looking for more striking pieces. These types of ink are also generally cheaper. But while many prefer the results that a dye ink delivers, others prefer to opt for a pigment ink as it is likely to last longer, be more resistant to weather impacts such as light and overall be more stable in colour. These are ideal for interior print jobs that are maybe going to be replaced within a few years.

Why should I use a pigment ink?

Professional users with a keen eye are often swayed towards using a pigment ink. Partly because it offers another dimension in terms of longevity. They are also scratch and water resistant. So, if it is likely the job is going to be outside or bombarded by the weather, then selecting a pigment ink is a wise decision. In addition, if printing black and white images then a black pigment ink offers a better print quality. They may be more expensive than the dye equivalent, the advantages should be considered in terms of their longer-term use.
